Harnessing Nature for Quality Healthcare

Employing the larvae of flies to remove infection and necrosis in humans has a several hundred year pedigree. Leading surgeons recorded their successes right up until the wide scale adoption of antibiotics in the 1940's. Our misuse of these powerful medicines has brought us to the brink of an infection calamity now driving a very real fear of being admitted to hospital.

The UK National Health Service sponsored the revival of larval therapy in 1995 when the Bridgend based Biosurgical Research Unit (BRU) commenced production and distribution. Other countries including the US and Germany, have also accepted that such natural therapies have a growing role to play in combating infection and chronic disease, and have sought to re-introduce the supply and use of larvae therapy.

However, this turn of the handle has seen dramatic improvements and understanding of the power of the larval therapy. A serious healthcare situation has been the driving force for application of detailed research towards this historical solution and the results are exciting, powerful and full of promise.

ZooBiotic spun out of the BRU in 2005 and is now a fully commercial operation with rapidly growing markets in larval therapy. ZooBiotic Ltd's core competence is its intimate knowledge of the species Lucilia sericata and how it can be harnessed to treat wounds in humans and animals alike.

Our staff of 25 and the new aseptic production facility in Bridgend Wales, provide the perfect foundation for international growth and partnership. We employ clinical, technical and operational specialists in order to support a growing number of customers around the world.

The medical profession has already demonstrated an enthusiasm for and endorsement of ZooBiotic Ltd's products (LarvE® and BioFOAM®) now in routine use for the rapid debridement of infected and necrotic wounds. We can demonstrate very significant savings in both time and money when compared with conventional wound treatments.

Co-operative research with learned institutions has revealed further exciting properties of the species Lucilia sericata. These studies concern the characteristics of the species to combat the growth of micro-organisms in wounds and to exercise a positive stimulation on the rate of wound healing IN ADDITION TO the currently exploited property of rapid wound debridement.

ZooBiotic is ideally placed to take advantage of these emerging potentials and aims to work with others on the rapid commercialisation of three healthcare developments:

  • Rapid debridement of infected and necrotic wound Elimination
  • Prevention of infection
  • Stimulation of wound healing
