Cost Effectiveness

Review data has recently been published on the comparison of average costs of maggot therapy and hydrogel products in the debridement of three classes of chronic wound (Thomas, S., J. Wound Care 15 (10) Nov 2006).

This data when summarised, suggests that if all chronic wounds requiring non surgical debridement in these three classes (pressure, leg and diabetic ulcers) were debrided using maggots rather than hydrogels, then the UK NHS could save as much as £165 million and achieve debridement in an average of under 5 days rather than 89 days with hydrogels.

  • A typical chronic wound costs £2225 to debride in the UK today.
  • It takes an average of 89 days to achieve with conventional dressings.
  • ZooBiotic products cost £200 to debride the same wounds
  • They take on average <5 days to achieve debridement.
  • ZooBiotic products can save the UK over £165 million per year and the EU in excess of £1000 million.
