BioFOAM

Our range of BioFOAM® dressings contain the larvae of Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Calliphoridae) together with small pieces of medical grade foam all contained within a medical grade woven polyester fabric pouch.

The dressings are available in six sizes each with an optimised number of larvae.

Available Sizes (cm) Product Code
2.5 x 4 BFD25
2.5 x 15 BFD150
5 x 5 BFD50
7 x 7 BFD70
10 x 10 BFD100
7 x 12 BFD120

The larvae are confined within the pouch by heat sealing the fabric which has been chosen to be comfortable and conformable in use. The fabric is hydrophilic, and allows the free passage of wound exudates and larval secretions throughout the dressing.

Newly hatched sterile larvae are transferred into the dressing pouch within a Grade A working environment (ISO Class 5) and prior to despatch are tested for aerobic and anaerobic bacterial contamination. The larvae are typically 3mm in length when the dressing is first applied, but grow to 12 mm during the treatment period (3-5 days).

The foam pieces or chips within the dressing serve an important role in the debridement effectiveness of the dressing. They are able to hold over 10 times their dry weight in weight of liquid. They are moist when the dressing is made and serve to sustain and protect the larvae both before and during clinical use.

In short, the foam creates a controlled and responsive environment for the larvae throughout use.

The dressing is presented for use in a plastic oyster that is specially designed with ventilation ducts to allow gaseous exchange. This in turn is presented in a peel open sealed pouch which also allows essential gaseous exchange.

ZooBiotic Ltd supplies BioFOAM® within a pack containing the essential elements of optimum larval therapy. In the community, each dressing is accompanied by one 60g pot of Sudocrem® recommended for application to the wound perimeter (see Application Guide), a yellow sealable disposal bag and yellow Larvae Bin designed to fully meet the UK guidelines for disposal of clinical waste*.

Each pack also contains an illustrated Application Guide and Data Card.

For hospital use, the pack contains the same components as in the community with the exception of the disposal bag and Larvae Bin.

Some additional materials required for completion of the BioFOAM® dressing are left to the user's choice (see Application Guide):

  • wound cleansing pack or dressing pack
  • low adherent perforated dressing (e.g. Release®, Melolin®, Telfa® etc.)
  • absorbent dressing pad
  • lightweight retention bandage as appropriate
  • sterile saline for removal of previous dressing residues (if required)
